Family Education: Communication - The Strength of First Community

There are many areas that needed more education in nowadays, for example education on parenting or family. After reading a wonderful post about “Professional Mother” I want to share it with you. Please be patient because I try to translate it from bahasa Indonesia into English (with some help from google translate too ^_^). Here it is.

There is always an answer for every problem. Common problems for every nation such as poverty, unemployment, corruption and other big problems talked about. Almost everybody loved to debate about it and thought that the other thing not as important as it is.

The truth every living person born, grow, and evolve a long with the family first. In February 2012, Indonesian statistic survey recorded the number of household in the year of 2009 is 58,421 million and increase to 61,614 million in 2010.

But the most ironic things that happen as one social problem today is family disorganization. Family disorganization is the breakdown of family as a unit because of the family members failing to meet their obligation as their social role (Juju, Kun 2007:23). Family disorganization more apparent because the variety of issues that arise such as children conflict with the law is likely to increase, also in way to resolve the delinquency cases, more family likely to hand over it to the police than to solve it themselves as a family (Kompas 18/10). In 2011, Komnas PA received 1,851 complaints to be filed in the child. Nearly 90 percent ended up with a criminal verdict. The number of complaints increased from 2010 as many as 730 cases. The condition is reinforced by data from the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights recorded 6,505 cases of children, submitted to the court in which 4,622 children were detained in jail (Kompas.com, 11/1).

Sociologists note, due to the emergence social problems including: issues of sense of value that is less instilled by parents, young growth of the organization or informal group whose behavior is not liked by the community, the emergence of young businesses to make changes in society are adjusted with the value of young people.  

Family disorganization can destroy a nation as termites eat the chair made from wood. However not, when the children as the nation's next generation having not good enough informal education then it is very likely to create a nation that look like a body with porous joints. The neglected children because the parents give up parenting on television, children who talk dirty as they often hear from environmentally irresponsible, children who are neglected because busy parents, and many other child cases.

Family is the strongest community owned by each individual. When the first community was strong, each individual has the ability to develop other larger communities. If only every Indonesian family realized that feat can be achieved starting from the family integration, no need dozens of years waiting time to achieve dreams. No need to wait for becoming adults to be able to make changes to the environment, no need to wait for becoming old enough to be able to share with others.

Poor communication between family members is one factor of family disorganization. Communication stalled for various reasons making relationships, understanding becomes impaired. Thus, improving communication with families is the duty of every family to improve the family integrity. Johnson (1981) indicates some role in interpersonal communication is interpersonal communication help the intellectual and social developments, interpersonal communication allows for understanding the reality around the individual as well as tests the correctness of the impression and understanding that people have about the world around (Supratiknya, 1995: 9). Effective communication is the standard of how far the result of the individual behavior in accordance with the other individuals expect. More effective communication between family members, the higher the child understands of the purpose that parents expect.

Effective communication that exists among family members provides opportunities being open to each other. In the Johari window, if arena widened the other areas such as the blind spot, unknown and facade will be narrowed. Opening up of family members with effective communication will expand the arena. So that a better understanding of themselves and family members on how they think. Any intimate relationship between parents and children also make it easier to direct the child on the understanding of a good action.

Bandura's social learning theory says that, every man learn not only from direct experience, but from mimicry or imitation (modeling). Behavior is the result of cognitive and environmental factors. That is, humans are able to have certain skills, if there is positive ties between stimuli were observed with their characteristics. When an active role to intensively interwoven positive communication with other members of the family allows each man's first community (family) will have great energy.
